History The area that would one day become Cocoa Beach was first settled by a family of freed slaves following the Civil War. In 1888, the area was bought by a group of men from the City of Cocoa which went undeveloped until 1923. At this time, the land was bought out Cocoa’s city attorney, Gus Edwards. Gus devoted all of his time to developing the area and by June 5, 1925, his hard work paid off with the founding of the Town of Cocoa Beach. Gus was elected as mayor and served as a commissioner along with J.A. Haisten, and R.Z. Grabel. On Jul 27, 1925, Cocoa Beach held its first official meeting and adopted a City Seal. In 1935, the FDOT opened up a one lane dirt road to Eau Gallie that later became A1A. In 1938, the first policeman was appointed in Cocoa Beach and, by 1939, the town of Cocoa Beach had 49 residents. At the beginning of 1942, the town prepared to receive men assigned to the newly opened Naval Air Station Banana River. Things remained relatively peaceful up until May 1, 1942 when the German submarine U-109 sank the La Paz off the shore of Cocoa Beach. Locals were recruited to salvage what they could off of the sunken submarine and worked to get rid of any debris that washed up on the beach. By mid-World War II, Cocoa Beach experienced money shortages for employees, and money to fix roads. By 1950, the first volunteer fire department was created and by 1951 the city’s first stoplight was introduced at the intersection of what is now A1A and Minuteman Causeway. In 1954, the first library was opened by the Woman’s Club in a building that was used by the Fire Department. In 1955, the city prepared to house the people that were going to be launching missiles from what is now Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. On June 29, 1957, Cocoa Beach became incorporated as a city. Cocoa Beach boomed in the 1960’s, growing more than 1000% between 1950 and 1960. This growth could mainly be attributed to America's space program, what with NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center being located less than 15 miles North of Cocoa Beach. Many people moved to Cocoa Beach for their jobs involving the space program. After manned space flights, the City of Cocoa Beach held parades in honor of the astronauts.
