In 2005, Brevard ranked first in Florida for the number of "A"-rated schools in the 10 largest districts, a tradition we endeavor to uphold each year. Brevard continues to rank in the top ten school districts state-wide in each of the 22 areas of assessment on the standard statewide exams administered annually. In 2008, the state of Florida recognized Brevard County as having the state’s highest graduation rate. Florida state has designated 25 schools as "Music Demonstration Schools”—22 of these schools are located in Brevard County. The Center for American Progress named Brevard County public schools as one of the top three large school districts in the state for "return on investment” in 2011. Brevard County’s schools are fully diversified, with magnet schools and charter schools whose curricula are designed to invigorate the spirit of learning. Our county is the first and only county in Florida to have a school health program that is operated by the county health department and paid for by the school district. These services are available to all Brevard students in both public and private schools. Brevard high school students may earn college credit through the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) program, the Advanced Placement (AP) program, or dual-enrollment programs. Magnet and charter schools allow students to acquire specialized training in the arts and sciences, allowing them to achieve and learn at a higher level. 12 Brevard schools offer students the JROTC program. Brevard students are consistently high achievers in athletics as well, competing annually in the Cape Coast Conference. Higher education in Brevard provides degrees in many fields, from vocational and technical educations to Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees conferred by area colleges. The University of Florida, Florida's land grant college, runs an agriculturally-oriented Cooperative extension service training and information center in Brevard. The Brevard Community College (BCC) BCC is two-year college, with multiple campuses in Melbourne, Palm Bay, Titusville and Cocoa. BCC Palm Bay offers technical and vocational training for Associate Degrees and Certificates for entering the workforce. BCC also offers certification by the "Police Academy", a basic requirement for employment in law enforcement in Brevard County and two year nursing degrees.
